Rendered in the late 19th century, this unique necklace is crafted with three operculum shells mounted on a gold-filled chain. These unusual black and brown shells have a cat’s-eye appearance and were common in Victorian jewelry. A fun antique necklace to add to your collection!
Operculum is Latin for “lid” or “cover” and is a unique type of freshwater snail shell. Widely popular in the Victorian era, operculum jewelry was worn to ward off the evil eye and protect the wearer.
The necklace is in very good antique condition with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the shell has a few noticeable signs of wear on the back. The chain is not original to the pendant and is gold-filled.
The necklace is 18″ long, the pendant is 2-5/8″ tall and 7/8″ wide, and weighs 15.71 grams. The box is for display only.
