Vintage 1930s hand-carved shell, diamond, sterling silver, and gold fill metal cameo brooch. This gorgeous brooch features the side profile of a beautiful woman adorned with roses and calla lilies in her hair and on her clothing and a diamond earring! Very intricately detailed piece carved by a seasoned carver who is showing off by fixing a real diamond to the cameo. Beautiful cameo to add to your collection!
Cameo carving has an ancient history dating back to 3 century BCE Greece. They are typically carved out of hard stone, shell, or coral and can be used as jewelry or objets d’ art. To read more about cameos, read our blog here:
The brooch is in very good antique condition with minimal signs of wear. The shell shows no signs of chips or cracks and is securely set into the metal. The metal is gold filled and sterling silver and shows typical signs of wear on the surface, fine scratches, and marks. The sterling shows areas of dark patina and has been polished sometime in the past. I tested and measured the round brilliant diamond, which is 0.03 carats or 3 points. The diamond is secure and does not wiggle. The pin stem is slightly bent but still fastens firmly to the fabric.
The brooch is 1-3/4″ tall and 1-3/8″ wide. The pin weighs 14.0 grams.
