Awesome, large 1950s green chrysoprase carved scarab screw back earrings. The scarabs are bezel set in 12K yellow gold-filled metal and glow in the sunlight. A wonderful pair of vintage earrings to add to your collection.
Napoleon’s conquest of Northern Africa in the late 1700s began the European interest in Egyptian motifs. In the 1920s, the unearthing of Tutankhamen’s tomb kicked off another scarab boom in costume jewelry. The scarab is a symbol of rebirth and regeneration associated with the sun god Ra and the sun’s return every day. Egyptians of all social classes also wore scarabs as a good luck charm to ward of evil and protect the wearer and their household.
The earrings are in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the stone and metal show a few light signs of wear, nothing noticeable or obvious. The screw backs are fully functional and stamped GOLD FILLED 1/20 12K.
The earrings measure 20mm tall and 15mm wide and weigh 9.47 grams. The box is for display only.
