Description
Crafted in the 1960s in Japan, this beautiful vintage ring features a rectangular-cut, 20.18-carat smoky quartz. The brown quartz is prong set into sterling silver with an open gallery setting, which allows the light to illuminate the stone and helps it glow. This statement ring is sure to draw many compliments!
Smoky quartz (NOT smoky topaz) is the brown variety in the quartz family and is rarer than rose quartz, amethyst, citrine, and rock crystal. Quartz is one of the most common minerals in the Earth’s crust and has been used since ancient times in jewelry or objet d’art. The Chinese even used thin slices of smoky quartz as sunglasses in the 12th century! Smoky quartz is the national gemstone of Scotland and is also known as Cairngorm.
The ring is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The quartz has a few fine lines under magnification. The stone is not chipped, cracked, or loose in the setting and was examined by a GIA Graduate Gemologist. The shank is stamped JAPAN STERLING. Even though it is stamped sterling, the band is silver-plated.
The stone measures 25 mm x 13.4 mm x 9.1 mm and weighs 20.08 carats, and the ring weighs 7.36 grams. The ring is a size 7.5 and cannot be sized. The box is for display only.
