Opal is a phenomenal gemstone that displays a rainbow flash knows as play-of-color when light enters the stone. The play-of-color is enhanced when the stone is more translucent or has a black background. This 0.69-carat opal has excellent translucence and displays a beautiful range of colors when the sun hits it. The solitaire stone is prong set into 14K yellow gold, which creates a lovely contrast between the shiny metal and glowing rainbow. Great ring for all ages and occasions!
Despite the common myth, opals are not bad luck! Opals played a significant role in a book from 1829 by Sir Walter Scott called “Anne of Geierstein,” where the stone was cursed and has therefore tainted the reputation of opal since. Before then, opals were considered one of the luckiest gemstones throughout numerous cultures; some even believed they contained lightning!
The ring is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the opal has no cracks or scratches and is not crazed, and there are no chips on the girdle — the prongs and not worn and secure the gem firmly into the mounting. The surface of the gold shows fine lines and marks under magnification, but nothing noticeable or visible. The shank is stamped 14K, and I, which is the maker’s mark.
The ring is a size 6.25 and can be sized. The opal measures 8.1mm x 6.1mm x 2.4mm and weighs about 0.69 carats.
