For over 6,000 years, lapis lazuli has fascinated civilizations like the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and more. Named from Latin for “blue stone,” it’s a gemstone classified as rock adorned with golden iron pyrite flecks. With a history of dispelling sadness, fending off spirits, and summoning angels, it was once as valuable as gold and even a pigment in manuscripts. Surprisingly, it was an alternate December birthstone until the 1950s.
The earrings are in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The gold has a few fine lines and marks, but nothing noticeable or obvious. A GIA Graduate Gemologist examined the lapis, which is not synthetic or treated. The back of the earrings are stamped 585 and 14K. The posts were removed, leaving these as non-pierced, clip-on earrings. A jeweler could easily add posts for pierced ears. One lapis cabochon has a fine crack near the bezel. This was probably created during the manufacturing process and did not affect the integrity of the stone.
The earrings measure 1-1/4″ tall and 1″ wide and weigh 27.48 grams. The box is for display only.
