Pearls, with an ancient history dating back to 2,206 BCE, are organic gemstones created by living creatures in water. Found in both freshwater and saltwater mollusks, they hold strong associations with myths and water-related lore. Cultures worldwide connect their silky orient and luster to the moon’s glow, attributing diverse meanings such as purity in Victorian times, mermaid tears in Japanese beliefs, and forming from a rainbow meeting the Earth in Persian legends. One famous tale involves Cleopatra impressing Marc Anthony by dissolving a giant pearl in her wine, demonstrating her capacity to consume an entire population’s riches in one dinner.
