Description
This beautiful vintage necklace is set with a vibrant, strongly purplish-pink oval-cut tourmaline. The 1.12-carat pendant is set in 14K yellow gold, which complements the gemstone’s rich hue. A dazzling and elegant pendant for all ages and styles!
Tourmaline was commonly misidentified for centuries, and it was not until the advent of modern mineralogy that it was correctly identified. Tourmaline is Sinhalese (Sri Lankan) for “mixed gems.” It was not until George F. Kunz wrote about the vast tourmaline deposits in California and Maine, which captured the Chinese’s attention who adored it for carvings. Tourmaline has the most extensive color range for any gemstone species and is the alternative birthstone for October. Ancient legend says that tourmaline is found in all hues because it traveled along a rainbow and collected every color.
The necklace is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the tourmaline and gold shows fine lines and marks, typical of vintage pieces. The spring ring clasp is stamped 14K and an unknown maker’s mark. A GIA Graduate Gemologist tested the gemstone. The chain is not kinked or knotted, and the spring ring clasp is fully functional.
The necklace is 18″ long, weighs 0.99 grams. The tourmaline measures 7.8mm x 6mm x 3.9mm and weighs 1.12 carats. The box is for display only.
