Made in the 1920s, this dainty shell cameo is framed by sparkling marcasites and set into sterling silver. The hand-carved shell features a Romanesque woman staring off to the right. The silver is stamped with stars, flowers, and Art Deco motifs sprinkled with marcasites. It‘s very dainty and feminine!
Cameo carving has an ancient history dating back to 3 century BCE Greece. Empress Josephine, Alexander the Great, and Queen Victoria were prominent cameo enthusiasts. They are typically carved out of hard stone, shell or coral, and lava and can be used as jewelry or objets d‘ art. To learn more about cameos, read our blog post here:

The necklace is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The shell is hand-carved; its surface shows light lines and marks, typical of vintage pieces. A fine line across her neck looks like a crack but is just a different hue on the shell. Several of the marcasites were missing or pitted and were replaced. The silver has a thick layer of patina that can be polished upon request. The cameo is not the exact width of the mounting, so there is a slight gap. The chain is not bent or kinked, and the spring ring clasp is fully functional. The back is stamped STERLING, and the clasp is stamped 1/20 14K G.F.
The necklace is 18" long, and the pendant measures 1-3/4" from bail to base and 7/8" wide.
I try to show an accurate picture of the item in my photographs and in the written description. Please note the size in the description, as images can often make the item appear more prominent than its actual size.
