This fabulous vintage necklace features tiny glass beads inlaid to create a floral mosaic pattern in brass. The dark blue, red, yellow, green, black, and white tiles flow seamlessly to create a wonderful piece of art. This is a cute necklace from the 1930s to add to your collection!
Micro-mosaic jewelry is a 2000-year-old art form that peaked in the 17th to 19th centuries during what was known as the Grand Tour era. Typically, each piece depicted a classic Italian scene, such as the Grand Canal in Venice or Vatican City in Rome, and served as a souvenir before photography and postcards. Each tiny tile is called tesserae and is usually made out of glass, or in some finer pieces, they are cut from gemstones and rocks. Italians have dominated the micro-mosaic market so much that most of the artwork in the Vatican is micro-mosaic replicas constructed over previous paintings decaying from the moist environment!
The necklace is in good vintage condition with some noticeable signs of wear. The glass tesserae are intact and not damaged. As shown in the pictures, there are a few small spots of dark tarnish on the chain and rope work on the pendant‘s face. The chain is a replacement and is also brass. The spring ring clasp is fully functional.
The necklace is 17" long, the pendant is 3/4" tall and 7/16" wide, and the necklace weighs 3.84 grams. The box is for display only.
I try to accurately depict the item in my photographs and the written description. Please note the measurements in the description, as images can often make the item appear more substantial than the actual size.
