Bakelite is an early, fire-proof plastic invented by Leo Bakeland in 1909. The ease of molding bakelite initially was used for industrial purposes but soon expanded into housewares, jewelry, and other decorative art. The affordability of bakelite jewelry became a favorite of the flapper generation, and its popularity only waned because of the onset of WWII.
The earrings are in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the plastic has fine lines and marks, nothing noticeable or obvious. The bakelite was tested, and the brass clips are fully functional.
