There is something so attractive about black onyx against silver; they contrast and pop against each other. These beautiful 1940s earrings were crafted in Taxco, Mexico, which creates some of the world's best silver pieces. The non-pierced, screw-back earrings feature two large cabochons of onyx, bezel-set into silver and accentuated with silver ropework and bead detailing.
Taxco silver is highly coveted and collectible, with a high quality of craftsmanship in each piece. Taxco is a tiny town between Acapulco and Mexico City with a long mining history. In the late 1920s, a highway finally extended to Taxco, which enabled William Spratling, a gentleman from the US, to find the town and discover the potential in the artisan community. He invited great metalsmiths to join him in apprenticing young artists, and the world took notice of the divine craftsmanship in the jewelry produced.
The earrings are in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the silver has fine lines and marks but nothing distracting or noticeable. The silver was recently polished, and you can see a dark patina in areas where it is difficult to clean. The backs are stamped AVM, MEXICO 925, and possibly DF. The screw backs are fully functional and secure the earrings to your ear. I examined the onyx.
The earrings measure 3/4" tall and 7/8" wide. The box is for display only.
Please note the measurements in the details section, as the item can appear more significant in the pictures than its actual size. Shipping is combined on multiple orders.
