There is something so attractive about black onyx against silver; they contrast and pop against each other. These beautiful 1940s earrings were crafted in Taxco, Mexico, a region renowned for creating some of the world's finest silver pieces. The non-pierced, screw-back earrings feature two large cabochons of onyx, bezel-set into silver and accentuated with silver ropework and bead detailing.

Taxco silver is highly coveted and collectible, known for its excellent craftsmanship in each piece. Taxco is a small town nestled between Acapulco and Mexico City with a rich mining history. In the late 1920s, a highway was finally built to reach Taxco, allowing William Spratling, a man from the US, to discover the town and see the potential of its artisan community. He invited skilled metalsmiths to help train young artists, and the world began to notice the exceptional craftsmanship in the jewelry they created.

The earrings are in excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The silver surface has fine lines and markings, but nothing distracting or noticeable. The silver was recently polished, though some areas show a dark patina that is hard to clean. The backs are stamped AVM, MEXICO 925, and possibly DF. The screw backs function well and hold the earrings securely. I examined the onyx.

The earrings measure 3/4" tall and 7/8" wide, weigh 8.41 grams, and the box is for display purposes only.
