This fabulous and eye-catching ring was rendered in the 1950s with 12 round-cut emeralds and 17 white cultured Japanese Akoya pearls in 10K yellow gold. Emerald is one of the "big three" gemstones - ruby, sapphire, and emerald - that are the most well-known and sought-after colored gemstones. The word emerald comes from the ancient Greek word "smaragdus." The first emerald mines were founded around 330 BCE in Egypt and were the personal mines of Cleopatra. Green has long been associated with relaxation, and gemstone cutters still use the soothing tone of emerald to rest their weary eyes after a long day of faceting.
The ring is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The Japanese cultured Akoya pearls have a few minor blemishes, but overall the nacre is intact, and they display a warm glow with a slightly pink overtone. The emeralds are not chipped or cracked and are natural. The stones and pearls are securely set into the gold without wiggling. There are a few worn prongs. The band is not stamped, and there is a dark spot on the band where a previous sizing occurred. A GIA Graduate Gemologist examined the gemstones.
The ring is a size 6 and can be sized. The emeralds weigh 0.36 carats in total; the pearls measure 4.3 mm, 4.5 mm, and 5 mm. The head is 1" tall and wide and weighs 6.83 grams. The box is for display only.
