Made in the 1950s, these cluster earrings feature 26 rose-cut pyrope garnets prong-set in gold wash. These German screw-back earrings shine and sparkle in the sunlight!
The name garnet comes from the Latin word granatum, which means pomegranate. Garnet is known as the stone of fire, Mars, and Scorpio. The bright red shades of garnet associated it with blood in Medieval times and were believed to treat many circulatory problems and help the liver remove toxins. Garnet's qualities include true friendship, passion, success, self-esteem, and fidelity, making it a popular stone for betrothal in past eras. They encouraged confidence, making them a favorite among ancient warriors. Some believe pyrope garnets are inside the Ark of the Covenant.
The earrings are in excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The gold wash shows a few tiny signs of wear, mainly on the backs, which aren't visible when the earrings are worn. The screw backs are stamped GERMANY. The garnets are free of chips or cracks and are securely set in the mountings. Under magnification, a few tiny chips can be seen at the facet junctions, but they are not visible to the eye. There are small areas of verdigris (green tarnish) on the back, which can be polished upon request.
The earrings measure 5/8" tall and wide and weigh 5.10 grams. The box is for display only.
