This is a fabulous, large 1950s green chrysoprase carved scarab bird brooch by the Krementz Jewelry Company. The scarab is set in twisted and etched yellow gold-filled metal and glows in the sunlight. A wonderful, signed vintage brooch to add to your collection!

Krementz was founded in 1866 by George Krementz, who started a small shop in Newark. Initially, they manufactured jewelry-making machinery before transitioning into jewelry for men and women. Several generations managed the company until it closed in 1997.

Napoleon's conquest of Northern Africa in the late 1700s sparked European interest in Egyptian motifs. In the 1920s, the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb initiated another scarab boom in costume jewelry. The scarab symbolizes rebirth and regeneration linked to the sun god Ra and the sun's daily return. Egyptians of all social classes also wore scarabs as good luck charms to ward off evil and protect themselves and their households.

The brooch is in very good vintage condition, with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the stone and metal shows a few light signs of wear, but nothing noticeable or obvious. The pinstem is stamped KREMENTZ.

The pin measures 2 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches wide, weighing 7.99 grams. The box is for display only.
