This cute Sigma Theta Pi sorority spoon pin from the 1950s was the first set of letters a pledge received after initiation. The sugar spoon represented the sorority's duty to hospitality and was worn as a badge of honor. This sterling silver pin is an excellent example of this mid-century Greek system tradition.

Lloyd Garfield Balfour founded the L.G. Balfour Company in 1913 in Austin, Texas. Lloyd's wives were members of the same sorority, and his small jewelry company began manufacturing jewelry for their organization. After being voted the sorority's national branch's official jeweler, Balfour eventually became the jeweler for ninety percent of the fraternal organizations in the US. The company is known for its quality and honesty and still operates.

The spoon is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The silver surface has fine lines and marks, typical of vintage jewelry, but nothing noticeable or distracting. The silver has a light layer of patina, which can be polished upon request. The back is marked STERLING and L.G.B. for L.G. Balfour Company. The clasp is fully functional.

The brooch measures 2-1/2" long and 1/2" wide and weighs 4.71 grams.
