Vintage 1960s MATISSE Enamel and Copper Mid Century Leaf Brooch - 60s Signed Red and Black Enamel, Copper Modernist Fall Leaf Brooch

This classic mid-century Matisse brooch features a large copper leaf covered in red and black enamel. The "stem" curls into a beautiful spiral, adding movement to the piece.

Renoir was founded in 1947, and Matisse Ltd. in 1957 by Jerry Fels, who was heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Geometric patterns with strips of copper twisted to resemble rope or coils were a favorite of the designers. The company is known for its cuffs and hinged bangles made of copper, a favorite metal to hammer during the Arts and Crafts era. Renoir made copper jewelry until about 1964, so you know each piece is a genuine mid-century modern creation.

The brooch is in very good vintage condition with typical signs of wear. The enamel shows little to no signs of damage or wear, and there are no chips or pits. The copper has a little sign of green tarnish on the brooch‘s back, which can be polished or cleaned up but is very small. One spot of black tarnish on the metal where the leaf and stem meet on the front is not very noticeable. There are also signs of black tarnish on the brooch‘s back on the copper, but you cannot see it while wearing it. The back is stamped, Matisse. The pin stem is slightly bent; I tried to straighten it as much as possible, but it was still fully functional and firmly tied to the fabric.

The brooch measures 2-3/8" wide by 2-6/8" tall, and the pin weighs 22.40 grams.
