Star sapphires have captivated jewelry enthusiasts for centuries, valued for their rare optical property called asterism—the shimmering six- or twelve-rayed star that moves across the stone’s surface when illuminated. Ancient cultures, including the Greeks and Romans, believed star sapphires possessed powerful protective qualities, acting as talismans against harm and envy. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, these gemstones became especially popular in cabochon rings and brooches, admired not only for their beauty but also for their mystical charm. Some of the world’s most renowned star sapphires, like the Star of India and the Black Star of Queensland, helped establish their reputation as some of the most magical and sought-after gemstones in jewelry history.
The necklace is in excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The sapphire is natural, not lab-created, and is free from chips or cracks. The back is stamped 14 K.T. GF R.
The necklace is 18" long, and the pendant measures 5/8" tall and 1/4" wide and weighs 1.27 grams. The sapphire measures 6 mm x 4 mm x 2 mm and weighs 0.50 carats. The box is for display purposes only.
