This classically designed and simple necklace from the 1970s is set with an oval-cut cabochon of white opal prong-set into yellow gold-filled metal. The play of color on the opal shows every color of the rainbow and displays flash patterns. A great vintage pendant for October babies or just any opal lover!
Despite the common myth, opals are not bad luck! Opal played a significant role in a book from 1829 by Sir Walter Scott, titled "Anne of Geierstein," where the stone was cursed, and as a result, opals have been tainted in reputation ever since. Before then, opals were considered one of the luckiest gemstones throughout numerous cultures; some even believed they contained lightning!
The necklace is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The opal is natural and not synthetic; it also shows no signs of crazing, indicating that it has not dried out. The stone is securely mounted and does not wobble. The clasp is stamped 1/20 12K GF.
The necklace is 18" long and the pendant measures 7/8" tall and 7/16" wide and weighs 1.51 grams. The box is for display only.
