Very cute and vibrant, these small stud earrings feature two cabochons of sun-spangled, orange-amber bezel set into sterling silver. The earrings have an open-backed setting, which allows light to pierce the stone and make the amber glow. A great pair of casual earrings!
Amber is an organic gemstone and one of the earliest gemstones set into jewelry during the Stone Age. It is fossilized tree sap from ancient trees that are millions of years old, compared to copal, which is immature amber and is only a few thousand years old. Amber is an analgesic, so many ancient teething rings were manufactured from it. Although Baltic amber is the most well-known, the primary source of amber today is the Dominican Republic.
The earrings are in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the silver shows fine lines and marks, typical of vintage jewelry. The silver has a dark patina layer, which can be polished upon request. The amber is not chipped or cracked, and I tested it. The butterfly backs and earrings are stamped 925 for sterling silver.
The earrings measure 8mm tall and wide.
