Poison rings, also called pillbox or locket rings, date back to ancient times and became especially popular during the Renaissance. Made with a hidden compartment under the bezel, they were used to secretly carry substances—ranging from perfume and keepsakes to poison—serving as both a fashion statement and a device of intrigue.
The ring is in very good vintage condition, with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the silver has fine lines and marks, typical of vintage jewelry. The silver has a dark layer of patina that can be polished upon request. The onyx is not chipped or cracked and is secure in the mounting. The internal compartment is stamped 925 for sterling silver.
