Pearls are the epitome of style and grace, with their internal glow and lovely luster. This gorgeous vintage necklace from the 1980s features matched 6-6.5mm cultured Japanese Akoya pearls and a fancy 14K yellow gold clasp. The round pearls have a subtle luster and glow in the sunlight, making this timeless necklace excellent for a vintage-loving bride or a June baby!
Pearls have an ancient history, first mentioned in 2,206 BCE by a Chinese writer; a living creature and not Earth create these organic gemstones. With their origins in water, pearls can be from freshwater and saltwater mollusks and are strongly associated with myths and lore involving water. The silky orient and luster of pearls often give them a glow that many cultures associate with the moon. Victorians thought pearls represented purity, the Japanese thought they were mermaid‘s tears, and Persians believed they formed when a rainbow met the Earth.
The necklace is in very good vintage condition with minor signs of wear. The pearl‘s surface, or nacre, is not chipped or cracked and shows a few natural blemishes from the formation. The white to cream pearls have a slight rose overtone, good luster, and are symmetrical. The necklace was restrung, and the pearls were individually knotted for protection. The clasp is stamped 14K.
The necklace measures 18" long, has pearls ranging from 6-6.5mm, and weighs 10.86 grams. It comes in the pictured gift box.
I try to portray the piece accurately in the description and images. Please note the measurements in the details section, as the pictures can often make the item appear more prominent than its actual size.
