Description
This is a stunning late Victorian or Aesthetic era necklace set with a light purple, amethyst set into the rose gold-filled metal. The sparkling 8.93-carat oval-cut amethyst compliments the Gothic designs and lovely etchings. A beautiful necklace for a special occasion or February baby.
The word amethyst comes from ancient Greece and stems from two words a- (“not”) and methystos (“intoxicated”). The Greeks believed wearing amethyst prevented you from drunkenness and, therefore, back a favorite for Bacchus – the god of wine. In Victorian times, amethyst symbolized passionate love and devotion, while the pearls represent purity and virtue. Together with the amethyst and pearl, this piece signifies romantic love. Amethyst is February’s birthstone, and pearl is the birthstone of June.
The necklace is in very good antique condition with minimal signs of wear. The surface of the gold fill has tiny signs of wear on high-relief portions, but nothing noticeable or obvious. The amethyst has nicks along the facet junctions under magnification, and large chips or cracks. There are some feathers (natural inclusions) that are eye-visible. The pendant is open-backed, hollow, and not dented or damaged. The chain doesn’t appear to be original to the pendant but is from the Victorian era. The chain is slightly more yellow gold, and the pendant is slightly more rose gold in tone. The jump ring on the clasp is silver tone, and the clasp is fully functional. There are no stamps or marks, and the metal and gemstone were tested.
The necklace is 17.5″ in length, the pendant measures 2-1/4″ tall and 1-1/8″, and weighs 30.10 grams.
