This is a small and beautiful antique Bohemian garnet star brooch featuring rose-cut pyrope garnets prong set into gilt. The pave-set garnets glow and sparkle in the sunlight. A very striking brooch, especially when worn on black fabric!
Bohemian garnets came from the hills of Bohemia in Czechoslovakia and were very popular from the 1820s to 1920s with the European upper-class. Michelle Obama just recently purchased a bohemian garnet brooch during her last visit to Prague.

The brooch is in very good antique condition. Gilt is a fine layer of powder over a base metal, and a GIA Graduate Gemologist tested the garnets. There are not missing garnets and no signs of chips or cracks. The hinge and pin stem are fully functional, but they are slightly stiff from years of wear. There are two tiny drops of lead solder on the back from earlier repairs; this is toxic but is safe as long as the brooch is secured to the cloth and doesn’t touch the skin. The piece can be polished upon request.
The brooch measures 1″ tall and wide and weighs 4.34 grams. The box is for display only.
