Description
This is a small and beautiful antique Bohemian garnet star brooch embellished with rose-cut pyrope garnets, which are prong set in gilt. The pave-set garnets glow and sparkle in the sunlight. A very striking brooch, especially when worn on black fabric!
Bohemian garnets came from the hills of Bohemia in Czechoslovakia and were very popular from the 1820s to 1920s with the European upper-class.
The brooch is in very good antique condition. Gilt is a fine layer of powder over a base metal, and a GIA Graduate Gemologist tested the garnets. There are no missing garnets and no signs of chips or cracks. The hinge and pin stem are fully functional, but they are slightly stiff from years of wear. There are two tiny drops of lead solder on the back from earlier repairs; this is toxic but is safe as long as the brooch is secured to the cloth and doesn’t touch the skin. The piece can be polished upon request.
The brooch measures 1″ tall and wide and weighs 4.34 grams. The box is for display only.
I try to show in my images an accurate picture of the item and the written description. Please note the measurements given in the description, as photographs can often make the item look larger than its actual size.
