Pearls are the epitome of style and grace, with their internal glow and lovely luster. This is a gorgeous vintage necklace from the 1980s, featuring matched 6-6.5mm cultured Japanese Akoya pearls and a 14K yellow gold fancy clasp. The round pearls have a subtle luster and glow in the sunlight, and this timeless necklace is excellent for a vintage-loving bride or a June baby!
Pearls have an ancient history, first mentioned in 2,206 BCE by a Chinese writer, these organic gemstones are created by a living creature and not in the Earth. With their origins in water, pearls can be from freshwater and saltwater mollusks and have a strong association with myths and lore involving water. The silky orient and luster of pearls often give them a glow that many cultures associate with the moon. Victorians thought pearls represented purity, the Japanese thought they were mermaid’s tears, and Persians believed they formed when a rainbow met the Earth.
The necklace is in very good vintage condition with minor signs of wear. The pearl’s surface, or nacre, is not chipped or cracked and shows a few natural blemishes from the formation. The white to cream pearls have a slight rose overtone, good luster, and symmetrical in shape. The necklace was restrung, and the pearls are individually knotted for their protection. The clasp is stamped 14K.
The necklace measures 18″ long, and the pearls range from 6-6.5mm and weighs 10.86 grams. The necklace comes with the pictured gift box.
