Description
This simple and elegant opal and old European cut red spinel ring is set with a carat cabochon prong set into silver. The classic halo design adds to the antique appeal of the piece. The light play-of-color features mostly green and blue flashes when you rock and tilt the ring. A great antique opal and spinel ring for an October baby!
Despite the common myth, opals are not bad luck! They were mentioned in a book from 1829 by Sir Walter Scott called “Anne of Geierstein” where the opal changed color with the protagonist’s moods. Before then, opals have been considered one of the luckiest stones in numerous cultures; even the ancient Bedouin tribes believe they contained lightning.
The ring is in very good antique condition with minimal signs of wear. The silver has fine lines and scratches from years of wear; this is typical of vintage and antique jewelry. The silver has areas of dark patina that can be polished upon request. There are no marks or stamps and the metal tested at 90-100% silver. The opal is not crazed or cracked, has no chips, and is natural. The play-of-color is muted, with the best flashes on the side. The prongs are securely holding the opal, and it does not wiggle in the mounting.
The ring is a size 5; it can be sized and weighs 1.76 grams. The opal measures 7 mm x 5 mm x 2 mm and weighs 0.39 carats. The box is for display only.
Please note the measurements in the details section, as the item can appear more significant than the actual size. Shipping is combined on multiple orders.
