Crafted in the 1980s, this unique watch made from Zuni silversmith Effie Calavaza features bright blue nuggets of turquoise set into sterling silver. Each gemstone is surrounded by a silver snake inlaid with turquoise eyes, which gives the piece an excellent southwestern feel. This watch's unique feature is that it keeps track of the calendar in English and Spanish (Monday = Mon and Lun). An excellent piece for snake-lovers and December babies!
Effie Calavaza, also known as Effie C., began her jewelry-making career in the 1950s when her husband Juan taught her silversmithing. When he passed in the 1970s, she started signing her jewelry with her name. Her trademark snake design is one of the most recognizable Zuni jewelry motifs. Zuni silversmiths learned their craft from the Spanish conquistadors that traveled through the southwestern US.
The watch is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of wear. The silver surface shows fine lines and marks, typical of vintage jewelry, but nothing noticeable or visible. The turquoise is natural, untreated, and was examined by a GIA Graduate Gemologist. The stones are secure in the mounting and do not wiggle. The watch is stamped EFFIE C. ZUNI, and the back of the face is marked with the watch's information. The battery is brand new, and the clock keeps proper time.
The watch fits an 8" wrist and measures 1-3/8" at the widest portion.
